Suggestions and Questions
Suggestions and Questions
Please feel free to use this space to provide topics for discussion or to ask questions you'd like presented during an upcoming DEI Meeting. Your question or suggestion will be brought up at the next DEI Meeting. Please attend to give voice to your question/ suggestion and provide input to the discussion and response.
As part of our DEI Meeting discussion on Black History Month, Carlton presented a resource for staff to educate themselves on the historical foundations of race. You can access the resource and pull information and videos out to use in classroom lessons.
Understanding Intersectionality
Intersectionality: The ways in which systems of inequality based on race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, and other forms of discrimination “intersect” and are inextricably linked to create unique dynamics and effects.
For example, when a Muslim woman wearing the Hijab is being discriminated, it would be impossible to dissociate her female* from her Muslim identity and to isolate the dimension(s) causing her discrimination.
All forms of inequality are mutually reinforcing and must therefore be recognized and addressed simultaneously to prevent one form of inequality from reinforcing another.
Things to consider and/or discuss if reviewing with your team:
Given the descriptions offered, are there places (work or personal life) you experience intersectionality?
What about at Crossroads Continuum? What are the intersecting forms that are obvious?
If yes, do you feel that this is recognized, understood, validated, and addressed?
These slides and materials were used in the August 10 Staff Training hosted by Carlton Watson, DEI Consultant. We welcome to use them in your meetings as you continue to learn and discuss your experiences at Crossroads Continuum.

DEI Meetings
Creating Space for Growth and Learning
Staff will meet monthly to discuss DEI initiatives and continue to drive our organization’s progress. Meetings are open to all staff; however, you must talk to your supervisor in advance to ensure coverage of your role/responsibilities. Staff may also choose to participate via Zoom using the information below.
As we communicate about these important topics and learn together, please recognize that we are all doing our best to be respectful and considerate and hope that you will do the same. We ask that everyone follow these guidelines in discussions to create a safe space:
Assume best intentions
Be aware of both intent and impact
Free open dialogue is encouraged
It’s ok to be emotional, as long as we remain respectful
Conversations are private and confidential unless we mutually agree to bring in additional listeners
Welcome discomfort, through challenging conversations we will learn together
